QuarkNet
Projected Topics and Activities

The QuarkNet project is a nationally-funded (National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy) program designed to bring high school students and teachers to the frontier of 21st century research that seeks to resolve some of the mysteries about the structure of matter and the fundamental forces of nature. The University of Kansas is one of the hosts institutions for the QuarkNet program.

The major goal of the Summer 2002 workshop for teachers is to teach high school science teachers the basic concepts about particle physics. This will be accomplished with lectures from the KU faculty, online activities, computer simulations, software analysis, and several field trips.

Note: Previous or prior background or study of particle physics is not required.

Topics for the Summer 2002 workshop include the following:

  • The History of Particle Physics

  • Current Topics of Modern Physics

  • Particle Accelerators and Detectors

  • High Energy Physics and Associated Experiments

  • Cosmology

  • Introduction to Quantum Mechanics

  • Relativity
